1.) I believe allusion is quiet alienating. Although useful the extensive use of allusion in the essay pointed attentions toward other texts rather her own. The writer seems to underestimate with her writing abilities and therefore fills space with text from other more successful writings. This convinced me that the write wasn't worth the reading. I kept on reading in hopes that the constant flashes to other text would stop, however I was wrong to exponential lengths.
2.) She says that "self-respect is a discipline, a habit of mind that can never be faked but can be developed, trained, coaxed fourth"(Joan Didion). I believe that the majority of the populous would agree with this. Self-respect is a born factor that cannot be man-made later in life but it can be molded into something unique and powerful. She also says that " one runs away to find oneself, and finds no one at home"(Joan Didion). This in my opinion means without self respect you will be caught in a loophole of identity loss and that you must realize you are born with self respect from the start you always had it.
3.) In my opinion it is the born power of these "disciplines" that she said before is what connects us to writing ability from self-respect. Everybody is born with the ability to learn to write as well as to respect ones self, its a matter if your willing to mold these skills into something worth significant value. A habit of mind or in my own words the integrated natural programming of the mind functioning as the basic codes , ethics , or skills to day to day living. These skills such as self-respect are the basic fundamentals on how a person recognizes him or her self in society. The ability to communicate for example already places this person in society as one who interacts with it as a unique sentient being that is able to be symbiotic with society.
I also think she could have had more text of her own, but i think this was a well written paper. The only thing i found troubling was some of the analogies she used. You are also correct with the fact that self respect can not be faked. Like she said self respect is a habit so mind which is the same for writing skills. I like your statement: " its a matter if your willing to mold these skills into something worth significant value" i believe that's completely correct if you mold your skills into something then they are just wasted and useless.
ReplyDeleteIt truly is all about self respect. You do have a good point. It really is a matter of your willingness to mold these skills and make yourself into something worthwhile.
